You might have heard of Cornerstone, the shaving subscription startup that raised a cool £1m in just four weeks through crowdfunding - pretty impressive. Cornerstone offer German-engineered razor blades that fit a custom aluminium razor handle engraved with your initials and a lineup of skincare products blended in the UK. Used together, the whole package gives you a smoother, more comfortable shave. Cornerstone's flexible, regular delivery service automatically re-supplies your dopp kit with products that match your preference. Best of all, delivery is free.
Until recently, I'd predominantly been using an electric razor for ease and speed but when Cornerstone sent me a box of their stuff to try, I figured I'd make the effort to get back into proper wet shaving.
There's so many shaving subscription services out there now that, to the uninitiated, it can be a bit of a minefield. I was definitely unsure about which companies offered the best quality and flexibility for my money. Cornerstone are a bit different - they get you set up with a chosen combination of grooming products and offer varying delivery schedules based on how many times a week you shave. It's easy to pause your deliveries, change your products or alter your delivery schedule. There's no commitment and you can cancel at any point.
Cornerstone founder Oliver Bridge started the brand with the ambition of creating the best possible shaving experience. Having suffered for years with sensitive skin, he was determined that shaving should no longer be an uncomfortable daily chore, but instead something to look forward to and enjoy – a familiar, personal ritual that gets your morning off to a great start. That's a philosophy that really chimes with me and my Morning Routines feature.
Two years on from an incredibly successful crowdfunding campaign, Cornerstone is now a thriving British success story, the brand has gone from strength to strength and have tens of thousands of men trusting thier products every morning as well as a long list of industry awards and accolades to their name.
The box I received contained an aluminium razor handle engraved with my initials, a cedarwood and volcanic sand pre-shave face scrub, a sensitive shave gel to protect sensitive skin from razor burn with eucalyptus oil and ginger, six german engineered razor blades and a post-shave moisturiser with mint and honey to restore natural moisture and reduce irritation. A pretty comprehensive kit.
The blades are very, very good - probably some of the best I've used. Fresh out of the box, they give a clean and close shave without burn or irritation. The aluminium handle feels well balanced in the hand and it also stands up on its end, the engraving is a nice touch too. All the Cornerstone products have a quality feel about them - Once you've cleaned up with the scrub, the shave gel really helps the razor glide across your skin and cut through the stubble. Finishing up with the cooling post-shave moisturiser leaves you fresh faced and ready for the day ahead.
I've been pretty impressed with the Cornerstone products so far. I don't tend to shave everyday so this should keep me going for a while but I'll definitely sign up for resupplies when the time comes. The set featured here is usually £30 but Cornerstone are offering £10 off your first order so head over to their site now to change up your morning routine.
